Handy Home Hints: Long-term Garment Storage

Do you have sentimental garments - think wedding dresses, christening robes, flower girl dresses or formal dresses - stuffed at the back of your wardrobe gathering dust?

If these garments are not stored properly, you will find them yellowed with age with signs of moth balls and mould growth. You may even see signs of the fabric beginning to perish or even rot, and once this begins the garment restoration process may not be possible.

When you are storing your garments, spend a few minutes making sure they will stand the test of time (and mould, insects & general wear and tear) until you revisit them in the future.

Simple Storage Steps:

Clean garment
Make sure garment is fully cleaned before storage, even if it was only worn for a few minutes or hours. Over time any impurities will cause rot or discolouration. elaundry specialises in formal wear, vintage and delicates cleaning.

Wrap the garment in white tissue paper
This will absorb any moisture in the air without the garment being affected.

Wrap in a blue sheet
If the garment storage area is exposed to any UV rays, the blue will absorb these rays.

Store with lavender
A lavender potpourri bag will keep away any bugs such as moths or silverfish. Do not store with any liquid scent.

Box the garment. This will keep it from being crumpled, or subject to any other environmental factors that could cause damage. You could also try a Space Bag storage bag to vacuum seal the garment and protect it from the environment.

Store in a dry place
The top of your wardrobe is best. Basically, anywhere off the ground away from dampness.

Check on it
Check on your garment every few months (or years) to detect any early signs of ageing or damage. If you leave it too long, it will be too late to care for any damage.

If you've recently pulled out a garment from storage which shows signs of ageing and rot, bring it to elaundry immediately. We will assess the damage and work to restore the garment to it's original condition.
