Winter is approaching and that means one thing: winter woolies! However, the simple mention of washing pure wool products scares most wool-wearers. Wool does require extra attention in the laundry, but does not need to be an arduous or difficult task.
Before you begin..
If your woollen garment simply has a smell about it (no stains or dirt), avoid washing by instead hanging it up in a well-ventilated area for some hours.
If washing is required, always read the care label before you begin. Confused about the symbols? See our Care Label Guide. Most wool garments are sensitive to heat so more often than not require dry cleaning. If so, bring straight to elaundry.
If the woollen item is machine-washable, follow the steps below.
The secret to washing wool
Avoid the washing machine (even the gentle cycle), just to be sure!
Use EcoStore Organic Wool Wash, avoiding harsh detergents
Never use bleach on wool as it will cause fibres to break down
Use cold to lukewarm water for washing & rinsing your wool
Do not use hot water - it will shrink the wool fibres
Don't squeeze, rub or twist your wool under any circumstances
Dry your garment flat and in the shade
Never dry your woollen items in a tumble dryer
Washing & drying steps
Fill a basin with cold to lukewarm water, and add a drop of EcoStore Organic Wool Wash. Swish the detergent just once or twice, don't make bubbles.
Soak your garment in the water. Let it lie in the bottom of the basin for a few minutes, avoiding rubbing or squeezing motions. The detergent will lift out the oils on it's own.
Replace the water as necessary, then rinse with clean cold to lukewarm water.
When lifting the garment, support it's weight and do not let any parts dangle. This is the moment when wool garments stretch out of shape, so pay extra attention.
Move the item to a large absorbent towel, roll it up and press to remove excess water. Repeat until the wool is damp.
Replace the towel and dry the garment flat in the shade, gently stretching out the item to it's correct shape and style.
A final word..
To remove those pesky lint balls that form on your woollens, try the Lint Shaver Wool Pill Remover. Your winter woolies will look good as new!
