Love your tradie and all his Stains!

Trades men, come into elaundry with all sorts of FAB stains, sometimes surprising our our dry cleaner other times not so much. To ensure you still love your tradie stains and all or if you are a tradie here are some handy hints to keep your clothing looking a little less ick out on site!

White Glue or Rubber Cement

Scrape off as much glue as possible using a dull kitchen knife. Treat the area with prewash stain remover and launder in the hottest water approved for the fabric.

Super Glue

Allow the glue to dry before attempting to remove it from fabric if it isn't already dry. Wet a cotton bud with acetone-based nail polish remover yes this works! Test the fabric in a small, inner seam just to make sure the fabric isn't compromised! Working from the outside of the stain to the inside, dab the spot with the swab, letting the swab sit on the spot for a minute or two.

Using a dull knife, scrape away any loose glue. Its best to repeat if stains are still present!

When you feel the glue is gone, treat the area with prewash stain remover like Eco Store laundry soaker and launder according to fabric label directions. Check the stain before placing the garment in the dryer; you may need to retreat. Drying will set the stain and it will be impossible to remove.

Ballpoint Ink and Washable Markers

Wet a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol again test the fabric just in case! Working from the outside of the stain to the inside, dab the spot with the swab. Change to a new swab as ink is absorbed to keep from redistributing the ink. Launder according to the fabric label directions.

Keep up to date with stain removal tips with elaundry handy advice page filled with loads of info some of which is even man friendly!

Handy Tips: Green Living

Martha Stewart queen of home and living, has inspired me to collate a list for all our elaundry lovers, how to go green, save energy and money!

Bring Back Cloth Napkins
On average, each American uses a staggering 2,200 paper napkins a year, none of which are recycled. Yes this is an American figure however we are just as guilty of using paper napkins to fix spills and have for your dinner guests than Americans. So in turn why not reduce waste (and deforestation) by choosing cloth instead? I know where you can find some great cloth napkins and even better enjoy customization with embroidery! You might even boost your mindful eating quotient: It's much easier to linger over dinner with the table set the old-fashioned way.

Try Reusable Towels
Paper towels cause waste yep 2012 doesn't get any easier waste and consumption are our two main offenders -- even if you stick to the recycled brands. Microfiber towels grip dirt and dust like a magnet and don't let go. After use, toss the towels into the laundry and reuse over and over. Mind the
Microwave
There are a few simple guidelines to follow to make microwave use safer and energy efficient, including avoiding certain plastics when reheating obviously you already know this! Use the microwave infrequently, if at all. Microwave ovens do leak radiation, but at very low levels that the FDA and most scientists believe are harmless.

Eco Shopping Bag
Take a recycled pillowcase bag to the store or farmers' market and cut down on plastic usage! It will surprise you how little plastics will build up in your household!

Winter Warmer!

How to protect your coat in a fun and creative way! These coat covers are a great way to ensure your coats looking its best for many seasons to come along with feeling accomplishes in making something! Also a perfect gift for friends and family.

Getting started:
1 mtr of fabric preferable linen
1 mtr of lace trim
matching thread
ruler
paper to make a patten
sewing machine

Making a pattern and preparing the fabric

Place a large piece of paper on a flat surface and lay the shoulders of your coat on top of the paper. Trace from the garment’s neck/collar around the edge of the shoulders and down about 10” along the sleeves (or more if you want a longer cover). Add a generous 2” (5cm) to the entire traced outline to allow for the thickness of the coat – more if your coat is bulky – and use the ruler to connect the two bottom points at the sleeves with a straight horizontal line. Draw a gently curved line at the top/neck edge connecting the outline’s two top points; this will become the opening for the hanger. Cut out the paper pattern. With the linen fabric laid out flat, cut two pieces using the pattern you just created.

Sew coat cover

Lay the pieces on a flat surface, right sides together and edges aligned. Sew the pair along the curving side seams with a 1/2 (13mm) seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Keeping the cover wrong side out, fold the bottom raw edge up 1/2 (13mm) to the wrong side and press the folded edge with a hot iron. Turn this folded edge another 1/2 (13mm) to the wrong side, and press the double fold. Pin the bottom hem in place, and, working on the fabric's wrong side, topstitch along the hem's upper fold.

Add lace to hem

Turn coat cover right-side out and pin lace onto the fabric's right side, across the bottom edge, positioning the end of the lace at one of the cover's side seams and the top edge of the lace 1/2 (13mm) from the cover's bottom edge. When you arrive back at the starting point, trim and fold the end under 1/2 (13mm); pin this end over the other end by 1/2 (13mm). Edge stitch from the bottom edge of the overlapped section of lace up to top edge, then pivot the needle at the corner and stitch along the upper edge of the lace around the cover. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your seam.
Finish neckline

With the cover wrong-side out, turn the neck edge in 1/4 (6mm) towards the wrong side. Press the folded edge. Turn this edge another 1/4 (6mm) to the wrong side, press again, and pin the double fold in place. Topstitch the double fold from the wrong side 1/4 (6mm) from the edge.

Handy hints: Fun curtains that will have everyone talking!

Curtains can be somewhat expensive however a new and fun craze is to make your own. Why not make your old jeans as the centre piece great talking point in your home.

Lets get started! You will obviously need your old denim, scissors, sewing machine and a curtain rod for hanging. Not keen on making this yourself our seamstresses can certainly help!
Step-by-step
1. Cut denim into squares
You’ll need to cut up your denim items into squares of the same size (approximately 25cm x 25cm). For the best visual effect, try to get a mix of squares which contain front and back pockets, seams and plain fabric.
2. Arrange
On a table or on the floor, lay out your squares into a configuration you’re happy with (the size will depend on where you intend to hang it).
3. Pin, sew & hang
Pin and sew square by square to form rows. Then sew the rows together, making sure the seams line up, and, finally, hang according to your style of curtain rod.

Enjoy some fancy fun curtains, great for kids rooms use old cartoon type material patters from clothing the kids will love you for it!

Customer Questions: Laundering Cushions

Love these cushions? Love Sarabah Estate Vineyard's Home wares Shop!

Question: During my spring cleaning I washed my couch cushion cover and now it is too small, totally off colour and crumbly on the inside when I got it out of the laundry. What happened?

Answer: The fabric covering for stuffed furniture and cushions is upholstery. The covers on the cushions usually have a zipper, giving rise to the myth that cushions can be taken out and the cover can be cleaned much like a pillow case to a bed set. This is not true in fact, the zipper was put in for convenience of the manufacturer. Most manufacturers do not except the cover to be removed from the cushion during use or cleaning.

One should never remove cushion covers for separate dry cleaning or washing. Any tumble cleaning method can destroy the back and shrink or otherwise damage the upholstery fabric. There are several different cleaning methods from spot cleaning to a light rub that will work on upholstery Since each fabric is different and the correct method is not obviously apparent the best thing to do is take the item with the cushioning to Brisbane’s Best Dry cleaner, elaundry.

Safety Class 103: Washer and Dryer Safety

A great deal of time as a parent is spent in the laundry room mostly because your child has found finger painting in red sauce their new favorite thing to do at the dinner table, as much as we love our kids, I have decided to share some safety tips for your laundry room!

Washer and Dryer Safety

Children find the clothes washer one of the most interesting machines clothes go in get thrown around and around and around with suds to only come out of the wash damp, to you and I this is just a daily routine however to a child it is intriguing which makes it all the most important to safety proof your washing machine! A child can drown in 2 inches of water, hence making it important to read on!

Investing in child proof locks is the most simple way to ensure your child's safety. Front loading washers are very easily assessable to small children. So it is most important to ensure that the doors are locked.

A scary yet very real example of tragedy happened in America when siblings locked the washer door on their brother and pressed the power button the child was killed, sometimes it is the most awful things that really make everyone aware of such safety precautions.

Check in on Wednesday for more safety in your laundry room! Elaundry celebrating laundry safety!

Teach Teens Laundry: It is possible

Teaching your teens about laundry is the last thing they would like to be taught, however this is a life skill that they definitely need as I am sure you are not going to be doing their laundry forever....

Step one:
Teach your teen about labels, care labels will teach the, what needs to be done with the garment. Pile all hand wash items in a pile, along with all "Dry Clean Only" in to a separate pile etc... Very simple yet very effective and can all be done very easily.
Step two:
Colors are also important, separating whites, pastels, light greys and whites and white print background type garments will also go into separate darker color piles. Separating clothing into types of fabric will benefit nothing worst than adding a towel into fleece and having little fur balls stuck to clothing. Close all zips and buttons on all garments before sticking them into the wash!
Step three:
Stain removal ok so your teen may be past bordom, but this is imperative! Begin by introducing them to a general stain remover Cinderella Stain Remover not only smells amazing but also is in a teen friendly squirt bottle.

Step four:
A simple temperature wash guide is a great and simple way for your teens to learn what can be cleaned at what temp elaundry has a great guide click here to load it!

Step five:
Purchasing a general detergent is best for teens that way they will never go wrong pefect solution is Bosistos Euco Fresh Laundry powder.

Step Six:
Always hang or dry clothing never leave to sit for hours in the machine. This is imperative to learn as a teen will save hours of laundry and your water bill with all the re-washes.

Quick Fixes for sensitive skin!

Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis are common ailments. People suffering from these serious conditions are always told not to use cleansers of any form but ironically, they are almost unavoidable as cleansers are necessary for basic cleanliness and hygiene in our daily lives.

So, could your laundry detergent be aggravating the problem? You may notice that your skin itches after you wash your clothes or try a 'new and improved' washing product. The ingredients in your detergent are to blame.
Fortunately, there are plenty of laundry detergents that are dye-free, scent-free and hypoallergenic that work for sensitive skin. Look for brands that include no added colours or scents.

Also, use less detergent and add a second rinse cycle to be sure that the itch is banished. If all else fails, try baby detergent which is designed for super-sensitive skin.

elaundry stocks a comprehensive range of all-natural or organic laundry products to combat skin ailments. Try Ecostore's Concentrated Laundry Liquid - made with eucalyptus oil - or the EcoStore Laundry Powder, which is idea for those who suffer from allergies and skin irritations as it is free of enzymes and phosphates.

Both are available for purchase online.

Handy Hints: Washings and Wearings

Its been raining day after day of late in Brisbane and washing is the last thing on your mind here a handy indicator how many wears can you get away with?

The humble bra
Unless you perspire profusely, bras can withstand 3 to 4 wearings between washings. But they do need a 24-hour break after wearing for the elastic to recover. If it's summer, wash them after each wearing. Perspiration wears down the elastic so washing actually extends the life of the bra.

Swimwear
Swimsuits should be washed after every wearing. Salt, chlorine, perspiration and body oils are deadly to the fibres of swimwear. This rule applies even if you don't get in the water.

T-shirts, tanks & camisoles
If they're body-hugging, these garments should be washed after every wearing. They absorb body oils and perspiration and when worn under jackets and sweaters protect them from soil.

Jeans
Denim is sturdy and great at hiding stains. But it still should be washed after every 4 to 5 wearings even if it looks clean. If you have stretch jeans, you'll probably want to wash them more often to prevent sagging and bagging, especially at the knees.

Work dresses, pants & skirts
If your dress or office wear pants and skirts are worn in air-conditioned office, they can be worn 4 to 5 times before washing unless you drop your lunch in your lap. You should always hang clothes you've worn where they can relax and air for 24 hours before wearing again. This will allow fibres to rebound and wrinkles to relax. To make your work clothing last longer, change as soon as possible after work into "play clothes".

Jackets & blazers
Jackets can usually be worn 5 to 6 times before they need cleaning, unless they have a readily visible stain. Again, be sure to give them breathing time between wearings. Be sure to check key contact areas - such as collars, sleeves and elbows - often to be sure they are clean. If you have a matching jacket and pants or jacket and skirt, be sure to wash or dry clean them together each time to prevent uneven fading.

Blouses & tops
As a general rule, blouses and tops should be washed after every wearing. Of course, if you don't perspire heavily and you only wear it for an hour or so, you can get a couple of wearings.

Pyjamas
Did you know you sweat at night? Well we do. We also shed thousands of skin cells. So, wash your pyjamas or nightgowns after 3 to 4 wearings. If you shower right before bed you might be able to last the week. And don't forget to wash your sheets once a week too!

Stain Alert : Remove Mildew Naturally

Firstly what is it? Its a tough harder when trying to treat something you have no idea about, mildew is a mold or fungus.

How do I remove it?
This seems more prevalent to the bachelor but leaving wet towels in a laundry basket or hamper, or even worst leaving a load of freshly washed clothing in the washer for a few days creates mildew and somewhat of a mouldy smell. Relax, it is easy enough to remove the mildew and smell, all two cups of white distilled vinegar to a hot wash. Wash clothing on usual cycle then wash again with usual detergent.

Green Thumb: Alternatives to Bleach

Supporting our environment is a big issue, so to ensure our laundry rooms are green here are some handy alternatives to bleach.

1. Distilled White Vinegar
Use white vinegar to pre soak your garments, add 1 part white vinegar to 6 parts water, leave garments to soak over night and wash as per usual. A softer alternative to bleach.

2. Oxygen based Bleach
A gentler approach to harsh bleach is an oxygen based bleach, such as EcoStore Pure Oxygen based Bleach, a safer, effective alternative to chlorine-based bleaches with no enzymes or optical brighteners. Made from mineral salts and plant-based ingredients derived from citrus and coconut.
The Oxygen Whitener can be used to pre-soak heavily stained clothes and fabrics (including nappies), or can be dissolved and added directly into the washing machine along with laundry powder. Works well in all water temperatures - when the powder is dissolved it releases pure oxygen which gently lifts stains without damaging the colour or strength of your fabrics.
3. Happy days in the Sun
Believe it or not but the sun is the best type of bleach and the best type of green you can get in the laundry. Saving energy, and your carbon foot print on the environment. The ultra violet rays from the sun bleach and disinfect your garments all while they dry. Try to avoid hanging darks in direct sunlight as they wont stay dark for long!

Washing: The difference between washing feather and foam pillows

Washing is a teadious task especially in winter, however can be somewhat time consuming when unsure about how to clean an item, so heres a how to clean between foam and feather.
Foam Pillows:
Memory and general foam pillows are not washer friendly. Why? Because the agitation will cause the foam to crumble and break. Hence memory and foam pillows are best hand washed. Easily washed in a large sink or even better the bathtub.
Hand wash in lukewarm water with a small squeeze of detergent, buy the best detergent money can buy with EcoStore Concentrated Laundry Liquid.
Fill the tub or bathtub with enough water to cover the pillow.
Hand wash the pillow and rinse several times to ensure all detergent is released from the pillow. However, try to avoid rinsing the pillow harshly.
Do NOT place your freshly cleaned foam pillow in the dryer it will only shrink and ruin the foam.
Hang the pillow out to air dry.

Feather Pillows:

Check the pillow for any small holes that can turn into one very big mess in a very short amount of time. Easily sow any holes or bring it on into elaundry yes we can fix those pesky holes.
Yes, you can wash your feather pillows in the washing machine. However add some towels into the wash to ensure the wash is a smooth one! Wash in cold water with a dash of detergent, remember a gentle wash is best for feather pillows.
Yes, feather pillows are dryer friendly add a tennis ball in with the pillows to ensure there are no clumps of feathers gathering during the dryer. Dry the pillows on a medium heat.

Confused???? Or just cant be bothered to wash your pillows? Bring them on into elaundry yes we wash pillows!

Do's and Dont's! Bleach

Bleach can be your best friend when disinfecting sick bedding and eradicating germs especially when winter flu's are in full swing. However, there are so fall backs if bleach is used incorrectly or over used.

If you notice a yellow type result from bleaching if means that you are using either too much bleach or washing the item in bleach too much. Bleach weakens fibres within and item and returns the synthetic polymers back to the original colour- yes this being yellow.

Unfortunately some stains like blood and sweat marks need a good dose of bleach to ensure that they are restored to the best of the garments ability. Eco store pure oxygen whitener, being a safer alternative to most chlorine-based bleach, having no enzymes or optical brighteners is best suited to ensure your whites stay white. Garment Alert: How to Store a Tie

Yes, we are going there as boring as it may seem ties seem to get creased and messy very quickly. So time avoid wasting endless hours re-ironing your tie or your man's tie why not learn how to store them properly the first time. So sit back grab a glass or two of wine and enjoy a free education in tie storage.

Important Info:
1. If a tie is stored properly you will avoid breaking the fibres usually silk, and also will protect the colour and finish of the tie.

If you choose to hang a tie with the suit remember to move the tie from time to time every three days is best to avoid embarrassing creases.

If your tie is:
Knitted or Crocheted:
Store a kitted or crocheted tie flat this will avoid creasing and stains. ( your care label will tell you)

Polyester or Wool:
Roll this tie loosely and store in your tie or sock draw. ( your care label will tell you)

FYI: All valuable neckties need to be stored out of direct sunlight to avoid nasty distortion from the sun. ALWAYS READ YOUR CARE LABEL!

Do you travel a lot?
Are you a heap all your stuff into your suit case to run to catch your business flight? Well make some extra time to ensure your suits are looking the best pressed when you arrive at your chosen destination. Fold all ties into fourths and slip inside one of the suit jackets packed. This will avoid and snags and or other damage when in transit or perhaps the most unthinkable a shampoo spill in your suitcase.
If perhaps a crease has arisen hang ties up in hotel room and leave in the bathroom, steam from the shower will fix any minor creases.

Preserve your most favorite tie!

1. Never tie knots in your tie too tight
2. Always untie your tie after wearing
3. Never iron a stain on your tie it is just going to cook it into the tie further
4. Allow ties to rest for three days after wearing them

Garment Alert

The garment:
A pink, white, black geometric printed design cotton jacket with various size black plastic stones around the neck, front, hem and cuffs. The care label reads, " Professional Dry Clean Only" with a warning that states, "press and steam on backside". There are no international cleanability symbols.
The problem:
After drycleaning in perchlorethylene solvent the black plastic trim partially dissolved resulting in an objectionable appearance to the trim, as well as self-staining of the base fabric and the lining. The plastic used to make this decorative design dissolves during drycleaning. Steam finishing and/or heat are not factors, so the label warning is not viable.
Who's responsible?
The manufacturer, since all components on a garment must be able to withstand the recommended professional cleaning process, as labeled.
What to do:
This jacket should be returned to the place of purchase or manufacturer.
This multi-color print jacket had plastic trim that dissolved during acceptable drycleaning procedures. This close up view of the lower front portion reveals the dissolved stones and self-staining of nearby fabric and lining after drycleaning.
Since the trim damage is related to solvent power, a process using a lower power solvent (such as petroleum, hydrocarbon, or GreenEarth) may have been successful. In some cases, depending on dye colorfastness and fiber type, professional wet cleaning may be an option. However, according to the United States care labeling regulation, this garment could be drycleaned safely in any solvent including perc. This interpretation may differ in other countries.
