Product Test Run- Cinderella Multipurpose Spray

Last week I tested the Cinderella Stain Remover- works FAB at removing my spray tanned brown stains on my white clothing! Yes unfortunately I am not blessed with glowing brown skin all year round! This week we are keeping with the Cinderella Products and test running the Multi Purpose spray, the claim to fame, its a plant based non animal or petrochemical product, best used for cleaning general house hold surfaces. Also smells like mint, yum!

 I decided to use it as a bench cleaner after I had decided to make a taste Thai dish, needless to say there was curry paste and mess all over the white bench tops, along with paste caked onto the cook top. I had friends coming over later and hate the thought of having a place smelling like a Thai curry no matter how good it is, its just not too welcoming. A squirt here and there the minty fresh smell eradicated the less than enjoyable Thai curry smell. GREAT! I left the spray to sit for about five minutes (stacking the dishes of course!) I used a wet cloth and wiped the benched over all of the paste and mess was wipes away without the troubles of scrubbing. No thick or greasy surface was left after wiping the benches down, something that is just a deal breaker with me if the left over residue.

I really enjoyed using this product just cant get over the amazing smells of this product!

Detailed Review : I bought this on a whim, and now get frustrated that it is hard to find in stores. The mint smell makes it a pleasure to use, and it did not seem to damage any surfaces, nor feel icky on the hands. Give it a try.

Product Test Run!

Monday mornings are filled with phone calls about dresses worn out on the weekend that now are coloured brown, fake tan being the number one culprit!

Of course dry cleaning ( special mixture of chemicals) removes fake tan with ease, along with special care and a good press ensuring the dress is like new again! However if you are like me an enjoy wearing a fake tan and white, it is more like a daily fight to clean garments with fake tan. So, I was nominated to be the new test run take home bunny for Cinderella's Stain Remover.

Firstly, I would like to point out that the smell of this product instantly takes me to summer days drinking pina coladas by the pool, how could you not love it!

The First Garment:

A white cotton tee, yes very simple but one of my wardrobe staples! Tan marks clearly on the arms of the tee.

The direction: Test on a small discrete surface area before commencing to ascertain suitability. Can be used on Carpet, (wow, I can attack those nasty red wine stains left from last christmas!) upholstery, clothing fabric. Spray the offending stain then rinse with a damp cloth using a light dabbing motion. Do not rub the stain. Advanced stains may need extra application.

 

So with the instructions I spray two sprays onto the affected area. Dab with a cloth and water, the tan marks suddenly disappear. I throw the tee in the wash, hang to dry. The following day the tan marks are gone.

 

Garment Two:

A strapless cocktail dress, worn twice. There is one very noticeable tan mark around the top of the dress, it could also be bronzer there as well. Please don't judge!

I start to think that if I drench the bodice of the dress with the stain remover and leave it to sit for five minutes I wont have to dab out the stain as much. Five minutes pass..... the stain still appears so I roll my sleeves up and get dabbing. 10 minutes of dabbing and the stain is less severe, I spray more stain remover and leave for another 5 minutes, the stain disappeared. Strangely enough I soak the dress in water and leave to air dry.

Of course I pressed the dress and there are no more tan marks, until next outing of course!

 

The product smells great, can be used on all different types of fabric and the best thing of all, it doesn't contain any nasty chemicals. No bleach, just plant based stain removing ingredient. The label also says its 100% people proof however Im not sure it is boyfriend friendly however I have left it conveniently out for him to try haha....

Question: During my spring cleaning I washed my couch cushion cover and now it is too small, totally off colour and crumbly on the inside when I got it out of the laundry. What happened?

Answer: The fabric covering for stuffed furniture and cushions is upholstery. The covers on the cushions usually have a zipper, giving rise to the myth that cushions can be taken out and the cover can be cleaned much like a pillow case to a bed set. This is not true in fact, the zipper was put in for convenience of the manufacturer. Most manufacturers do not except the cover to be removed from the cushion during use or cleaning.

One should never remove cushion covers for separate dry cleaning or washing. Any tumble cleaning method can destroy the back and shrink or otherwise damage the upholstery fabric. There are several different cleaning methods from spot cleaning to a light rub that will work on upholstery Since each fabric is different and the correct method is not obviously apparent the best thing to do is take the item with the cushioning to Brisbane’s Best Dry cleaner, elaundry.

Fact or Fiction? Laundry Myths.

Laundry stories always amaze me, along with the myths that people tell me so here are a few, and "No the abominable snow man is not real!"

Myth #1: Use Hair Spray to Remove Ink

Yes ladies and gentleman hair spray was big in the 80's but that doesn't mean it works now-a-days. In the 1950's hair spray contained alcohol hence it could remove ink stains however hair spray doesn't contain alcohol hence it will not remove ink stains could in fact ruin the garment or product even more!

Myth #2: Add Coffee to Rinse Water to Keep Clothes Black

I heard a story about a lady whom added a cup of black coffee to her darks to keep them dark however for this to work you would need a washer filled with espresso to have any effect on your darks, and will not keep clothing from fading!

Myth #3: Hot Water Kills All Laundry Germs

Ok, now I would hope you have learn that this is myth from my blog about how to disinfect bedding a few weeks ago if not please refer to it- You can not kill all germs and bacteria with a hot wash sometimes it will only increase the growth of germs the only way to ensure germ free clothing is to disinfect with a chlorine bleach like Eco Store Pure Oxygen.

Husband got "man flu"? Kids got the sniffles? Yes its about that time of the year, Flu Season. 

Here's how to disinfect sick bed laundry, in order to decrease the likelihood that your family will get sick this season.

A big part of taking care of someone who is sick is making them feel as comfortable as possible. And, if they have something contagious, it's also important to keep everyone else in the household healthy.

The best sheets for a sick bed are those that can be washed in hot water and disinfected with chlorine bleach. You will probably need to change the sheets everyday, if not more often. Sometimes just changing the pillowcases will make the sick one feel more comfortable.

For your own protection, place the sheets in a laundry basket or hamper to carry them to the washer. If you carry them in your arms near your face, some germs can remain on your clothing or hands and cause problems.

If you have blood, vomit or medicine stains, treat these first. Sheets should then be washed in the hottest water possible with detergent and chlorine bleach to help kill germs, bacteria and head lice. Line-drying sheets in the sun will also help to sanitize them.

How to Remove Color Bleeding in Laundry

Ever opened the lid of the washing machine and gazed at your freshly washed clothes with pleasure that quickly turn to horror? If you have ever experienced this then you know the disaster of colors bleeding in the laundry. Dark-colored clothes sometimes transfer colors to lighter-colored clothing if you wash them together by mistake. While this can also happen to some degree with dark clothes, when it happens to your white or light-colored clothing, it can be devastating. When colors bleed in the laundry, take a few quick steps to minimize the permanent damage.

1. Sort through your laundry load and remove all of the clothing that has color stains. Try to find the article of clothing that caused the problem also, and remove it from the laundry load. Place any clothes that do not have color stains into the dryer, and finish drying these clothes.

2. Place the color-stained clothes back into the washing machine. Fill the washing machine with cold water just until the clothes are under the water level. Set the washing machine to an agitate cycle, and agitate them for three to four minutes.

3. Stop the washing machine. If the clothes are all white, add approximately 1/2 cup chlorine bleach. If the clothes are not entirely white, use color-safe bleach instead. Use 1 cup of white vinegar instead of bleach if you prefer.

4. Start the agitate cycle on the washing machine again, and agitate the clothing for five minutes. Turn the washing machine off, and soak the clothes for approximately 15 minutes.

5. Drain the water from the washing machine and add an appropriate amount of laundry detergent to wash the clothing in a regular cold wash cycle. Set the washing machine to a normal wash cycle, and wash the clothing normally.

6. Examine all of the clothing after the wash cycle finishes. If the color stains are gone, dry the clothing in the dryer as you normally would. If the color stains persist, repeat Steps 2 through 5 to try to remove the stains again.

Dye Migration During Dry Cleaning

Problem Garment: Dye Migration During Dry Cleaning

The problem: Colored yarns, trims, panels or printed designs bleed during dry cleaning, causing dye transfer and staining of the lighter areas of the same garment.- UHHHHH is generally the reply to this problem, followed by, "this is an expensive garment"- Read on to be informed!
What does it look like? In most cases, only local areas of the lighter color fabric will show transfer of the fugitive dye. This can be seen in random splotches or streaks or only along the nearby edges where the colour panels or yarn meet. in other cases, the dye bleeding may have discolored the entire lighter areas of the garment.
What Causes it? The dye or pigment used to create the darker coloured fabric, yarn or design print was soluble in dry cleaning solvent. Therefore, during this professional dry cleaning this solvent soluble dye bleeds out and stains lighter areas of the garment.

Can It be Prevented? There is no way the dry cleaner can prevent solvent soluble dyes from bleeding during dry cleaning. Also, since most colors on dry cleanable items are colorfast to dry cleaning, the cleaner would have no cause to suspect that any particular fashion would have a problem with colorfastness.
Who Is Responsible? When fabrics are properly dyed there will be no fading and dye migration during cleaning. The textile manufacturer who applied the original fabric color or design is responsible for its colorfastness, therefore, the manufacturer must be held responsible when such dyes fail in cleaning.

Its a Quilt Kinda World- Easy how to clean a quilt

With winter on the way it is time to start pulling out your winter woollies! Quilts otherwise known as donas are a beautiful addition to any home whether you use them on beds or as art for the walls. Antique or heirloom quilts require special care to be preserved for generations to come. For newer quilts, both hand-quilted and machine-quilted, care and cleaning directions can be found right here.

Basic Quilt Repair

Before you clean your vintage quilt, you'll need to repair any rips or tears in the fabric. Avoid the stress and bring it into elaundry where our very talented seamstresses with over 50yrs experience combined will be able to stitch your treasured quilt back to new again! However if you feel the need to mend the quilt yourself here are some helpful hints to help you!
1. Spread the quilt out on a bed or on top of a sheet on the floor and examine carefully for any worn patches, tears or stains.
2. If you are a good seamstress, repair the quilt yourself by using small stitches and thread and fabric that match the design and colors of your quilt. There are sources of vintage or period-specific fabrics to patch your quilt or reproduction vintage fabrics can be used replace damaged areas.

Cleaning Your Antique Quilt

Vintage quilts require special care during cleaning. Do not dry clean or machine wash an heirloom piece. Dry cleaning chemicals can permanently harm old fabrics and the agitation action of a washing machine can cause fibers to shred. However at elaundry we will treat your quilt with the expertise of our Delicate General Manager. If you want to stick to a DYI that is simply fine also we have included some helpful tips and tricks to getting the best clean out of your Quilt.  
1. Begin by airing your quilt outside on a sunny day to restore freshness.
2.To remove dust, vacuum with a nylon stocking over the end of vacuum hose and hold the hose slightly above the top of the quilt. If the quilt has beading, embroidery or applique, do not vacuum. You could damage the work.

Hand Washing Heirloom Quilts

If you feel that you quilt must be washed, begin by checking the fabric for colorfastness. Testing is simple, wet a piece of white cloth with cold water and gently rub it over each different color or fabric in your quilt. If there is any color transfer to the white cloth, don’t wash your quilt at all. Washing will result in discoloration and fading.
If you have hard water or iron bacteria in your water source, you should use distilled water for washing your quilt. You don’t want to risk having minerals stain your fabric.
To hand-wash, fill a deep, laundry sink or bathtub with cold water. Be certain that the sink or tub is very clean and has no residue from cleaning agents that could cause damage to the quilt. Use a liquid detergent that is gentle and free of dyes and perfumes. A liquid detergent will disperse in the water and leave less residue on the fabric. Add 1/2 cup vinegar to the water to both brighten colors and soften the quilt.

Place your quilt in the water, being certain that the entire quilt gets wet. Gently move your quilt around in the water. Allow the quilt to remain in the water for about 10 minutes. Next, drain the wash water and fill the tub again with fresh water. Repeat draining and refilling the tub until the water and quilt are soap free – clear water and no suds.

How to Store A Quilt

If you plan to store your freshly laundered quilt, be certain it is completely dry. Allow an extra 24 to 48 hours for drying before storing. One of the best ways to store a quilt is on an extra bed. Keeping the quilt flat will eliminate creases and wear on folds. Simple cover the quilt with a clean sheet or bedspread.

If flat is not an option, store the quilt in a cotton or muslin bag or in an acid-free box. Do not store in areas where moisture and temperature levels will fluctuate. Before you fold the quilt, use acid-free tissue paper as padding to prevent sharp creases. You can also roll your quilt around an acid-free tube and slip it in a cotton bag.
If you are storing your quilt in a wooden box or dresser, wrap it in the acid-free tissue to avoid contact with the wood. Oils and acids in the wood can cause spotting and damage. Once a year, bring your quilt out of storage to air and to check for damage. Refolding will also prevent permanent creases and damage.
Proper care of your beautiful quilt will insure it will last for generations to come.

Always read the care labels and know the fiber content. Acetate and silk fiber satins should be dry cleaned. Others can be washed using warm or cool water, regular detergent and a medium cycle.

For washable satins, they can be allowed to drip-dry or dried in the dryer on medium heat. If ironing is needed, use a low setting.

Garment ALERT: The Valentines Day Aftermath STAINS!

Elaundry hopes you had a wonderful Valentines Day! However Valentine's Day may be all hearts and flowers on Feb 14th, but after the romantic gestures, roses, chocolate, wine, elaundry gift vouchers the list goes on and on. You may be left with some tough stains from your treats and treasures wine, chocolate, flower pollen and make-up. Here are some handy tips and tricks to avoid a stained Valentines day nightmare!

Chocolate

A moment on the lips does not have to be a lifetime on the blouse. Chocolate is a combination stain - of oil and dye. Begin to remove this stain by rubbing heavy-duty liquid detergent or a paste of powdered detergent and water into the stain. Try Murchison-Hume Luxury soak wash! Wash garment as usual with an all-fabric bleach and detergent. Check for stain before drying. If it is still present, repeat steps BEFORE drying.

Red Wine

Attack this stain quickly and red wine will come out in a breeze!Check your washing care label! For washable garments, dilute the spot with club soda or cool water, sprinkle heavily with salt and flush again with water.

Candle Wax

NOW don't freak out! Lets breath its only candle wax! If the wax has not hardened, place an ice cube on the stain to freeze the wax. You do not want to try to remove hot wax because, most likely, you will push the stain deeper into the fibers of the fabric. When the wax is hard, use a kitchen knife or your fingernail to gently pick it up off the fabric.
Now lets start by treating the oily/waxy component of the stain with a pre-treater like Cinderella Stain Remover! Great and smells amazing!!!Then rub with heavy-duty liquid detergent or a paste made of powdered detergent and water. Scrub stain lightly and rinse in hot water. Flower Pollen

To prevent yellow pollen stains, pinch off the stamen of the lily before arranging the flowers. It will save you a stain! First, NEVER rub the pollen with your hand or a cloth this will only rub the stain further into the fabric. Take the garment outside and shake off the excess pollen. Better yet use a piece of tape to pick up the pollen grains. The trick is to keep the pollen from penetrating the fibers, less pollen less stain!
For washable fabrics yes you will need to check your care label tag first, soak the garment in cold water for at least 30 minutes and then rinse thoroughly; repeat these two steps until most of the stain has been removed. If the stain is still present, apply a spot stain remover to the area and wash the garment in the hottest recommended temperature for the fabric.Check the area again before drying the garment – if the stain remains, repeat the stain remover and wash treatment.

Kids off on their first job? Q: How do I remove the "Balls" from a pure wool knit dress?

You require a battery operated whiz-machine called a pill remover. Simply rub the device over your the balls on your dress (also known as "pills") and the machine shaves them off tidily and without too much effort! Purchase the Lint Shaver Wool Pill Remover in our online store.

Or if you'd prefer a home remedy, secure the dress very tightly over a flat surface (like your ironing board) with pegs, then VERY carefully shave the pills off with a leg razor. It does work, yet cutting your woven threads is very high and it takes a very long time to complete a whole garment. Also, be careful to stretch the weave our of shape. This can happen on a hot or humid day.

For the best results, focus your pill-removing to the elbows, the back (where your back leans against a chair) and underarms where the most abrasion occurs with wear.

Q and A: Preventing Mould Growth in Cupboards

Q: Any tips on keeping mould at bay in the cupboard?

Mould is a type of fungi, and is black, grey, green or white. It's unsightly, smelly and is the third biggest source of allergies after dust mites and pollen.

Mould thrives in damp, dark and poorly ventilated areas. To allow mould spores to grow and reproduce, a food source (dust, dirt or organic matter) and moisture is required. Generally, moisture occurs from condensation when water droplets form of surfaces when warmth meets cold. Mould appears on areas prone to condensation - such as corners or rooms, cupboards and behind furniture that is pushed again walls.

Discourage mould growth by using heat, insulation and ventilation to reduce the amount of moisture in the air and to increase the warmth of the surfaces of walls or cupboards.

First and foremost, if you have a persistent mould problem, you may have to 'disinfect' the room before taking any of the steps below. Wash surfaces with Exit Mould.

If mould is growing in a particular, localised area it usually indicates the presence of high humidity which may be caused by faulty plumbing, leaking showers or damp walls. These are structural building issues and may need to be inspected by a builder or plumber.

Next, ventilate the area by opening windows and doors. If the cupboard is in the kitchen, laundry or bathroom where warm air is continually circulated, ensure you ventilate daily. If the area has no windows or doors, open the door and use a fan to ventilate regularly.

Air circulation minimises mould growth. Ensure cupboards are not too crowded. Regularly clean out cupboards to prevent dust.

Finally, regularly inspect the area for mould growth.
