Handy Home Hints: Traveling Washing Tips

We want laundry to be the furthest thing from your mind when traveling. Therefore, a little pre-planning is essential.

Where are you Going?

First consider where you're travelling. If you're going to a tropical location during the wet season where humidity is near 100%, you will need to wash more regularly than if you were indoors at a work conference. Make a list, plan what you need and pack accordingly. Pack versatile, comfortable and fast-drying clothes. Look for good quality synthetic fibres such as rayon & micro-fibre, as they are crease-free and easily washable. Stick with a dark colour palette - you will get more wear out of them than an all-white wardrobe.

Packing Right

- Ensure your clothes are washed, dried and ironed before packing
- Pack heavy items on the bottom of your luggage with light items on top
- Avoid wrinkles by carefully folding garments along the seam and normal crease-lines
- Excess room in luggage causes clothes to shift and therefore wrinkle, so pack shoes in shoe bags and clothes in plastic packing bags
- Take a mesh or plastic bag to separate dirty clothes from clean clothes
- Pack a mini stain removal pen and sewing kit for emergencies
- Unpack and hang garments as soon as you arrive at your destination

Washing when Away

Keep up to date with cleaning your soiled clothes to avoid a half-day spent washing.

Don't underestimate the sink and running water. Pack some small sachets of laundry detergent, fill the sink with tepid water and swish your clothes around in the sudsy water before rinsing and hanging to dry. If there's no drying rack, get creative - hang from bed posts, chairs, door knobs and shower curtains.

Traveling Mark suggests washing your clothes each time you shower. Grab a handful of clothes and once you have washed yourself, apply some of the soap to your clothes and give them a rub. Rinse and hang to dry.

If you are embarking on a trip more a week-long, chances are you will need to get your laundry washed. Options include hotel laundry services, or the humble coin-operating laundromat. Exercise caution when using hotel laundry services - prices can often be very high.
