Handy Home Hints: Removing Mud From Carpet

Having carpet in the home, it is difficult to avoid mud and dirt stains brought in my grubby feet. If left too long, stains can settle leaving permanent marks. To avoid having to replace carpets, follow these steps:

1. If the stain is wet mud (as opposed to dried dirt), allow the mud to dry completely. DO NOT attempt to wipe away mud that is wet or damp as this will spread the stain and possibly grind it into the fabric fibres

2. When the mud is dry, gently scrape off the excess with a plastic knife or spoon to loosen. Vacuum over.

3. Use a mild liquid detergent to remove stains. Effective detergents are carpet shampoos and liquid dish washing soap. Put a few drops of cleaner onto the stain, and blot the stain with a towel or rag until the area is dry.

4. If the stain hasn't entirely disappeared with the liquid detergent, you can soak the area with white vinegar. Again, blot the area dry with a clean towel.

5. Rinse the area thoroughly with water to remove all cleaning chemicals and residue from carpet. Blot dry.
