Laundry Tips: Cleaning & Storing Fur

Fur comes at a price. It is expensive to purchase, and often expensive to care for. But, a beautiful fur coat, gilet or stole can elevate the simplest outfit to Hollywood-worthy proportions. Follow these tips for easy fur cleaning & storage.

FUR CLEANING

By it's very nature, fur filters and traps dirt and therefore needs annual cleaning. However, fur requires special care so leave it to the professionals. Whether the coat appears soiled or not, always have it professionally cleaned prior to storing. For a quote, contact elaundry today.

FUR STORAGE

In Europe, fur lovers store their coats in furriers - warehouses with controlled temperature and humidity conditions to maintain the quality of the fur. However, fur can be stored at home if careful attention is paid to the storage environment, especially during summer.

Store your coat in a cool, dark place with low humidity, such as a closet. Hang the fur on a broad-shouldered wooden hanger to help the coat retain it's shape. Spray lightly with Bosisto's Eucalyptus Oil Spray to protect against dirt and bugs. Enclose the coat in a cotton or silk garment bag (never plastic). Ensure the coat is not crammed or crushed in your closet.

WEARING FUR

If you've just taken the fur out of storage, leave it to air overnight before wear. If you need to refresh the fur, spray lightly with Bosisto's Eucalyptus Oil Spray. If the hairs look unruly, smooth them down with clean hands. Never comb or brush the fur. If the fur is matted, bring it to elaundry immediately.

Fur coats retain the smell of pungent odours like smoke and perfume easily. Remember to apply perfume and hairspray before putting on fur.

If the coat gets wet, shake it and hang it in a cool place to dry. Never rub the water from the fur.

TOP TIP

A fur stole is a great alternative to a full fur coat as it is versatile and is easy to store during summer.

Wow, I've never seen more fur coats in my life! Would these methods work for older furs? Hopefully I can restore one of my grandmas fur coats.

Great information on fur cleaning. I recently inherited a beautiful fur coat from my grandfather. I feel like a king wearing it. It hasn't been worn in several years though and the fur looks a little matted. I will take it in the get cleaned professionally.
