Handy Home Hints: Restoring Wet Papers

It is possible to restore wet paper and books. Read on to find out how to get them back to their original state:

1. Remove as much liquid as possible from the book by carefully shaking off the liquid. Act quickly to minimize the amount of liquid that remains on the book's pages

2. Place the wet paper item into a plastic bag or container and freeze for a couple of weeks. The freezer will use dehydration to draw out excess moisture in the paper

3. Remove book and dry papers as soon as they are thawed or unsealed (a blow dryer will do). Be wary of attempting to force paper products apart - continue drying them until they come apart easily

Your book or paper product should be almost as good as new. Water stains will still remain on the book's pages, photos etc., but they will be usable.

Photocopy valuable papers and records as soon as you can because substances in the water may make them deteriorate.
