Laundry Tips: Fresh Sneakers

prettymadnesstumblr

The sun is out and the birds are chirping. That means one thing, it's Spring, and official Sneaker Season.

Since your sneakers have been banished to the back of the closet for months, they may be in dire need of a good clean. So, we are offering shoe cleaning tips & tricks to combat smelly shoes.

Come Unlaced

Your shoe laces are often the dirtiest part of the shoe. So, remove the laces and wash them in the washing machine with your colour-coordinated load. If they're beyond repair, you can replace laces inexpensively.

Inner-Souled

Remove the insoles and allow them to air. If they are particularly smelly, sprinkle with baking soda to absorb odour and moisture. Then, rinse with cool water and air dry.

Come Clean

Before using soap and water, brush off any loose dirt and soil (or cobwebs!) Most sneakers are able to be machine washed with cool to warm water and normal detergent.

If the shoes are pricey, handwashing is more gentle. Use a soft brush and solution of mild detergent in warm water. Scrub the inside and outside of each shoe.

Drying Time

Never put shoes in the dryer! High heat can cause them to lose their shape and that will affect their support. Instead, stuff shoe with towel or paper and air dry in a well ventilated space. Be careful not to stuff shoe with newspaper as you'll find ink on your socks the next day.

I have found hanging my tennis shoes on my clothes drying rack with my other laundry out in the sun is a great way to get them dry.
